Blocked Gutters and What They Do to Your Roof

A blocked gutter can push water back under the roof and into the ceiling, even when the roof itself has no holes. Here is how to spot it and deal with it.

Blocked Gutters and What They Do to Your Roof

When a ceiling leaks, most people blame the roof sheets straight away. But there is one part of the roof that gets overlooked again and again: the gutter running along the roof edge. A gutter clogged with leaves, silt or a bird's nest can send water the wrong way and into the house. This article explains how a blocked gutter causes leaks, the signs to watch for, and what can be done about it.

How a Blocked Gutter Causes Leaks

Water backs up under the roof

A gutter catches water from the roof and carries it to the downpipe. When it is blocked, water pools and the level rises. In heavy rain, a full gutter can overflow backwards, towards the underside of the roof edge and the fascia board, instead of outwards. From there water gets into the ceiling space and drips along the edge of the outer wall.

Box gutters carry more risk

Some houses, especially terraces and shophouses, have gutters set between two roof slopes or behind a parapet wall. These sit above the inside of the house. When one blocks and overflows, the water goes straight into the house rather than onto the ground. Leaks from a box gutter often appear in the middle of the house and are hard to trace from outside.

Weight that drags the gutter down

A gutter full of standing water, wet leaves and silt becomes very heavy. Over time the brackets loosen, the gutter tilts the wrong way, and the joints between gutter sections start to leak. Standing water also speeds up rust on metal gutters.

Signs Your Gutter Has a Problem

During rain

  • Water spills over the gutter edge like a waterfall instead of flowing to the downpipe.
  • The downpipe lets out only a trickle even in heavy rain.
  • Water drips from under the fascia board or runs down the outer wall.
  • Sounds of pooling or overflowing water above the ceiling near an outer wall.

After rain

  • Water stains on the ceiling along the edge of the house, often at the front or back.
  • A fascia board that is soft, rotting or peeling.
  • Moss, black streaks or small plants growing in the gutter.
  • Eroded soil or a puddle under the gutter, because water lands in the same spot every time it rains.
  • Mosquitoes around the house, since standing water in a gutter can become a breeding spot.

Telling it apart from other leaks

Stains along a wall can also come from failed flashing at the roof-wall joint, as explained in our article on leaks where the roof meets the wall. The main clue is when the leak happens: if it only appears in very heavy, prolonged rain, an overflowing gutter is the prime suspect.

What Blocks Gutters

Leaves and twigs

Houses near big trees get leaves and twigs in their gutters all year round. Rotting leaves turn into sludge and plug the downpipe opening.

Debris from the roof

Old tiles shed fine grit and sand, while rusting metal roofs shed flakes of rust. All of it collects at the bottom of the gutter, especially along flatter stretches.

Nests and animals

Birds and squirrels sometimes nest inside a gutter or at the mouth of a downpipe. One nest in the wrong place is enough to block the whole flow.

A blocked downpipe

Sometimes the gutter itself is clean, but the blockage sits inside the downpipe, usually at a bend or at the bottom where it joins the drain. Typical signs are water pooling in the gutter only near the pipe opening, or water bursting out of a pipe joint halfway down the wall.

A gutter that no longer matches the roof

After a renovation, such as an extended back roof, the roof area draining into one gutter can grow while the old gutter and downpipe stay the same. That gutter may not be blocked at all, yet still cannot carry the volume in heavy rain, so the effect is the same as a blockage.

Local weather

On the east coast, the monsoon from November to January brings heavy rain for days on end, so gutters on homes around Kota Bharu are worth checking before the season starts. In places like Johor Bahru and Kuching, heavy afternoon storms can fill a gutter quickly, so any blockage shows up fast.

What You Can Do

Regular upkeep

Gutters you can reach safely from the ground floor can be cleared regularly, especially before the rainy season. Use a stable ladder and have someone hold it. For upper-floor gutters, box gutters and gutters on shophouses, the job is safer left to workers with the right equipment. Do not walk on the roof to reach a gutter.

Leaf guards

For homes near trees, mesh or leaf guards over the gutter and at the downpipe opening help reduce blockages, though the gutter still needs checking from time to time.

When the gutter needs repair

A gutter that has rusted through, leaks at the joints, slopes the wrong way or has broken brackets needs repair or replacement. Gutter work is usually done together with other roof work, such as a leak repair or a roof replacement. Roof leak repair starts from RM150 per job.

When the damage has spread

Overflow that goes on for a long time can rot the fascia board and the ends of the roof truss. Rotten truss timber has to be replaced before a new gutter goes up, because brackets will not hold in soft wood. A ceiling that has been soaked for a long time may also need replacing.

How It Works with RoofFix

Start with photos

  • Send photos of the gutter from below, the affected ceiling and your location on WhatsApp. A video taken during rain helps a lot.
  • We give an initial estimate based on the photos.
  • A free on-site inspection checks the gutter, fascia and roof.
  • You get an exact quote before work begins.

For projects of RM3,000 and above, instalments of up to 3 months interest-free can be arranged with a 30% deposit. See all our roof services on the services section.
